Emergency Fund Calculator
Estimate a practical emergency savings target based on your essential monthly expenses.
What this calculator helps you plan
An emergency fund is money set aside for real surprises. This calculator estimates a target using your monthly essential expenses and the number of months you want covered.
For many people, the first goal is not a perfect emergency fund. It is a starter cushion that prevents every surprise from becoming new debt.
Method: the calculator multiplies the monthly essential-expense amount you enter by your selected months of coverage. It also shows common comparison milestones so you can see the scale of different targets.

Estimate how much you may want set aside for emergencies.
How this calculator works
Emergency fund formula: essential monthly expenses × months of coverage. If essential expenses are $3,000 and you choose six months, the planning target is $18,000.
Not sure what belongs in the number? Read what counts as an emergency and the starter vs. fully funded emergency fund guide. For the complete planning process, use the Emergency Fund Guide.
Formula: monthly essential expenses × months to cover = estimated emergency fund target.
Use expenses you would still need to pay during a disruption: housing, basic utilities, groceries, necessary transportation, insurance, minimum required debt payments, medication, and other essential household needs. Optional spending generally should not drive the target.
The result is an educational planning estimate. It does not predict emergencies, investment returns, inflation, unemployment benefits, severance, insurance reimbursements, or every household risk.
How to choose your month target
One month: A starter cushion that can help with small emergencies.
Three months: A stronger safety buffer for many households.
Six months or more: Useful for single-income households, unstable income, or higher-risk situations.
